When a word, a group of words
(phrase), or a clause is used in a sentence as the subject of a finite verb is
called noun, noun phrase, or noun clause respectively.
Examples:
1. Rahim is a good boy.
‘Rahim’ expresses the name of a person and
is used as the subject of finite verb
‘is’. So it is a noun.
2. ‘Walking’ is good for health.
‘Walking’ tells us the name of an action
and is used
as the subject of finite verb ‘is’. So, it is a noun.
3.The brush with a long handle’ is used to clean the ceiling.
‘The brush with a long handle’ tells us the
name of a special
type of brush and is used as the subject of
verb ‘is used’.
So it
is a noun phrase.
4.‘To walk’ is a good exercise for an old man.
‘To walk’ tells us the name of an action and
it is used
as the subject of verb ‘is’.
So, it is noun phrase specially noun
infinitive.
5. ‘That the earth is a planet’ is known to all.
‘That the earth is a planet’ is a
sub-ordinate clause and it
is used as the subject of verb finite
verb ‘is’.
So, it is a noun clause.
6. ‘Early to bed/ rise’ is a good habit.
‘Early to bed/ rise’ tells us
the name of an action in a particular
time and it is used as the subject of finite
verb ‘is’.
So, it is a noun phrase.
