Usage of Participles


We use three kinds of Participles (on the basis of tenses).
These are
a) Present Participle
b) Past Participle  &
c) Perfect Participle


 a) Present Participle:
  When a ‘verb+ing’ works in a sentence as an adjective
 to modify a noun or pronoun is called present participle.

1. A rolling stone gathers no moss.
    roll+ing= rolling modifies the noun ‘stone’.

2. The hunter looked at the flying bird.
    fly+ing= flying modifies the noun ‘bird’.

3. We saw him running.
   run+ing= running modifies the pronoun ‘him’.


** Find out the ‘Present Participle’ in the following
    sentences and say which word it modifies.
   ( First two are done for you.)

4. The beauty of the rising sun charms all.
Ans. Participle: ‘rising’ and it modifies the noun ‘sun’.

5. Give me some writing paper.
Ans. Participle: ‘writing’ and it modifies the noun ‘paper’.

6. It is a singing bird.
7. Don’t get on a running bus.
8. A barking dog seldom bites.
9. I love the noise of falling rain.
10. I saw a flying bird.

11. This is an interesting story.
12. He has a pleasing behaviour.
13. It is charming scenery.
14. They heard Rina singing.
15. He saw something burning.
16. I saw Salma getting out of the car.
17. Did you see Kamal talking to someone?
18. Don’t touch a moving fan
19. Bangladesh is a quick developing country
