Gerund is used in a sentence as the object of a preposition:

d) Gerund is used in a sentence as the object of preposition:
1. We can learn by listening.
    Gerund – ‘listening’.
    And it is used as the object of preposition ‘by’.
   Gerund ‘listening’ expresses the name of an action.

2. I am thinking of going there.
    Gerund—‘going’.
    And it is used as the object of preposition ‘of’.
  Including the gerund ‘going’, the phrase ‘going there’ expresses
   the name of an event.

3. We shouldn’t learn by rote but by understanding.
   Gerund — ‘understanding’. 
   And it is used as the object of preposition ‘by’.
  Gerund ‘understanding’ expresses the name of an action.

4. We can live well by eating balanced diet regularly.
   Gerund—eating. 
   And it is used as the object of preposition ‘by’.
  Including the gerund ‘eating’, the phrase ‘eating balanced diet regularly’
    expresses the name of an event.

 5. You can’t learn anything from the nature without being curious. 
    Gerund — ‘being’.
   And it is used as the object of preposition ‘without’
   Including the gerund ‘being’, the phrase ‘being curious’
    expresses the name of an event.

Now try to understand the following sentences and explain how the Gerunds are used in the following sentences: 
6. We can learn by reading.
7. We can learn by traveling.
8. He is fond of riding horse.
9. He is fond of playing football.
10. He is fond of drinking milk.
11. She is fond of singing.
12. Children are fond of eating candy.
13. You can’t learn English without learning the four
     language skills.
14. Teacher is engaged in teaching English.
15. The class was favorable for learning English language.
16. We can learn by speaking.
17. We can learn by writing.
18. We shouldn’t learn by rote but by understanding.
19. We have to learn by understanding.
20. There is no way to achieve command in English
     without practicing the four skills.
21. Native speakers learn their languages easily
     by listening and speaking.
22. He is tired of having worked hard.
23. Always check the oil before starting the car.
24. They painted the house instead of going on holiday.
25. You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.
26. We can live well by eating a balanced died.
or, By eating a balanced died, we can live well.

27.We can learn many things from the nature by being curious.
or,By being curious, we can learn many things from the nature.

28. You can fight a fought by being courageous.
or, By being courageous, you can fight a fought.

29. You will learn more by reading more.
or, By reading more, you will learn more.

30. You can be healthy by taking exercise regularly.
or, By taking exercise regularly, you can be healthy.

31. You can success in life by working hard.
or, By working hare, you can success in life.

32. You can have a good health by eating vegetables.
or, By eating vegetables, you can have a good health.

33. You will be a good football player by practicing football.
Or, By practicing football, you will be a good football player.

34. You can’t learn anything from the nature
      without being curious.
or, Without being curious you can’t learn anything
     from the nature.

** As above you can put the phrase at beginning or end of the sentence. If the phrase is at beginning then you have to push a comma at the end of the phrase.
Without eating balanced diet, you can’t live well.
Without being courageous, you can’t fight a fought.
Without reading more, none can learn more.
Without having food, we can’t live.
Without being punctual, we can’t do well in our life.
Without having vegetables, you can’t get minerals.
